Carvoeiro village has existed for centuries as a small, intimate fishing village. In 1965 a foreign resident wrote about the place " The mode of living remains essentially medieval".

In recent years the village has been enhanced so that it can cater for a select number of visitors whilst at the same time care has been taken to maintain it's village character by avoiding the introduction of high rise developments.

The village is host to many excellant restaurants offering local cuisine with international tastes also fully catered for. There are several small supermarkets in Carvoeiro and a good local market.

Happily, there are stilll many examples of the quaint traditional houses, and the village square which leads onto Carvoeiro's secluded beach offers attractive open air restaurants and market stalls where you can unwind and enjoy the sea air and relaxed atmosphere.

For sports enthusiasts the local facilities are excellent. Nearby is an impressive David Lloyd tennis centre, and 5 minutes away is a 9 hole golf course. A 36 hole championship golf course is 3 miles away.

One of the reasons the village is rated so highly by returning visitors is the variety and attractiveness of it's many surrounding beaches. Spectacular cliffs surround most of these, some of which have eroded to create beckoning dark caves. A list of the best of these is found on the 'Surrounding Area' section of this site.
